Brest Fortress — a heroic defense story

Brest Fortress is one of the key symbols of courage and self-sacrifice during the early days of the Great Patriotic War. On the morning of June 22, 1941, at the very start of the Nazi invasion of the USSR, the fortress garrison was the first to face the enemy's blow. Despite the surprise attack and the overwhelming enemy forces, the defenders fought to the last — without retreating.

The citadel became the site of fierce battles, with every stone steeped in bravery. Even after days and weeks of resistance, Brest Fortress remained unbroken. The defenders’ heroism has gone down in history as a symbol of unyielding spirit and devotion to the Motherland. Today, the story of the defense is studied, inspiring books, films, and museum exhibitions. For its courage and resilience, the fortress was honored with the title "Hero Fortress."

Each year, commemorative events are held here to keep the memory alive. Brest Fortress is not just a historic site — it is a place where heroism echoes in every stone.

Belovezhskaya Pushcha — a UNESCO World Heritage Natural Site

Belovezhskaya Pushcha is one of the oldest forest massifs in Europe, first mentioned in chronicles in the 11th century. For centuries, it served as a hunting ground for monarchs — from grand dukes to emperors. In the 16th century, it was granted protected status, becoming a precursor to modern nature reserves. During the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the forest was carefully guarded as a national treasure.

The forest’s most iconic residents are the European bison — majestic animals that nearly went extinct in the 20th century. Thanks to conservation efforts, the population was restored, and the Pushcha became a symbol of international environmental cooperation. Today, Belovezhskaya Pushcha is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique natural and historical significance.

Museums, tour routes, and preserved monuments highlight the area's cultural and scientific importance. Visiting the Pushcha is not just a walk through the forest — it’s a journey through centuries of living history and natural wisdom.

Brest Cathedral of St. Simeon

Brest will greet us with the majestic view of the Cathedral of St. Simeon — the main Orthodox church of the city, rightly considered its pride and architectural gem. Built in 1865 in the pseudo-Russian style, it is especially impressive in the evening when the facade is illuminated by the soft glow of night lighting. Among the main relics of the cathedral are the relics of St. Athanasius, the abbot of Brest, who, despite severe torture, never renounced his faith. Today, a monument to St. Athanasius of Brest stands near the cathedral walls.

Brest Hero-Fortress

Continuing our journey, we will immerse ourselves in the dramatic pages of history from the first days of the Great Patriotic War. At dawn on June 22, 1941, the Brest Fortress garrison was the first to face the attack of the Nazi invaders and heroically held the defense for more than a month in complete encirclement. At the entrance, you will be greeted by the piercing voice of Yuri Levitan with a government announcement about the attack on the Soviet Union and the legendary song by Alexander Alexandrov “The Sacred War,” which became the anthem of that time. On May 8, 1965, the Brest Fortress was awarded the honorary title “Hero-Fortress.”

Museum of the Brest Fortress

In the very heart of Brest, we will delve into the atmosphere of the tragic days when the fortress was occupied by Nazi troops. The Brest Fortress Museum is a landmark that embodies the heroism and resilience of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War. Here you will see authentic artifacts, military equipment, documents, and photographs telling the story of the immortal feat of the defenders of the Brest Fortress.

Brest Church of St. Nicholas

Enhancing the impressions of the city, the Brest Church of St. Nicholas is an outstanding example of a church built in the retrospective-Russian style, first mentioned in 1390. According to legend, its construction was financed by a merchant who, after getting stuck in the river, managed to free himself only after vowing to build a church in Brest in honor of St. Nicholas. Over the centuries, the church has gained a rich history: it was home to one of the oldest cathedral brotherhoods in Belarus and housed a hospital.
